Digital high power microscopes are the type of microscopes that are getting highly popular these days. They are special types of microscopes capable of bringing crisp fine images of the specimen under observation. There are certain applications that only high power microscopes can be used. And it follows that if regular microscopes are used, either the images produced are not totally accurate or there are absolutely no clear image produced at all.

High power microscopes are commonly used inside a biological laboratory setup. These microscopes are the ones most preferred when viewing live blood samples, fresh tissues, cells, and other microorganisms. Dry blood, on the other hand, is a different scenario, although it may be viewed with a phase contrast microscope as well. And for a more advanced viewing exercise, teachers can ask their students to observe dry blood samples through a dark field illumination system, rather than the most commonly used bright field microscopy.

Consequently, this brings forward the other type of high power microscope - the dark field microscope. Although this can be used to view unstained samples like a phase contrast microscope, the principle that makes the device works is very much different from it. Dark field microscopes are a little more similar to a bright field microscope than phase contrast microscopes. But instead of producing the specimen against white background like bright field microscopes do, the sample can be seen against a black background.

And it is made possible with the high power lenses that are equipped with the dark field microscope. A dark field microscope is created with a dark field condenser and its main job is to light the specimen from its sides. It is different from regular microscopes because regular microscopes are normally lighting its specimens from its bottom. Dark field microscopes are best used with blood samples as well. And this is because it is capable of producing the sample’s more intricate details, which can’t be seen normally using a regular low power microscope.

High power microscopes, being complex in nature, are usually binocular. Most of them are compound microscopes that use the common principle of light to illuminate the sample under observation. There are also units equipped with only one eyepiece. These are called monocular microscopes. Monocular microscopes may also be high power microscopes. The observed image, however, maybe a little limited when compared with a binocular high power microscope.

But what makes digital high power microscope at par with the current times is its capability to be interfaced with a computer system and a digital camera. Most high power microscopes are manufactured with trinocular port. Aside from the binocular eyepieces, an additional port is attached to it so that a digital camera can be interfaced with the microscope’s system. As a result, the images can be seen through a compatible monitor set. Observers find this more convenient, as they don’t need to peep through the eyepiece just to study the specimen.

But that’s not all what a digital high power microscope can do. Because it is digital, it can print images directly to a still or video printer for easier filing. Hard copies of certain specimens are essential. This is especially true when the microscope is used to diagnose certain diseases. With quality printouts directly coming from the microscopes, doctors will find it easier to explain to patients what their diseases are. In the same way, doctors could easily refer to the images for the patient’s future treatments.
